Cooktop Cleaning in Vancouver: Glass and Stainless Without Scratches
Vancouver cooktop cleaning and polish for glass, induction and stainless tops, done without new scratches. Insured, owner-led team. Send a photo for a free estimate.
Most cooktop cleaning calls we get in Vancouver arrive in two waves. The first lands right after the September 30 move-out, when a landlord in Kitsilano or Mount Pleasant opens the unit and finds a glass top with black rings burnt into every element. The second comes around Thanksgiving, which falls on October 12 this year. Somebody wants the stove looking decent before family shows up. Or the cranberry sauce boiled over and set hard on the glass.
Both are fixable, most of the time. The trouble is that the usual home fixes, a green scrub pad, baking soda rubbed hard, a razor held at the wrong angle, often swap a stain for a scratch. And a scratch in a glass-ceramic top does not come out.
We clean and polish glass, induction and stainless cooktops across Metro Vancouver. Almost every job starts with working out what the mark actually is.

What does professional cooktop cleaning and polish involve?
It means taking the cooktop back to a clean, even surface without adding new damage. On a glass or induction top, that is scraping off burnt-on residue, lifting metal marks and film with a cream made for glass-ceramic, then buffing it streak-free. On stainless, it is degreasing, removing heat tint along the grain and finishing with a thin coat of polish. Grates, burner caps and the counter edge get done too.
The polish part matters more than people think. A glass top wiped with the wrong spray for a year carries a thin film that bakes on every time an element heats up. You see it as a grey haze when the afternoon light hits the stove. Strip that film and the black looks black again.
We also clean the grease line where the cooktop rim meets the counter. If the backsplash tile or caulk behind the stove is failing, or the cabinet door below it sags, we fix that on the same visit. Our kitchen cabinet repair article covers the cabinet side.
How do you clean a glass or induction cooktop without scratching it?
Start with the surface cold, soften the residue, and let a razor scraper held nearly flat do the heavy lifting instead of a scrub pad. After scraping, a cleaning cream made for glass-ceramic goes on with a soft cloth or non-scratch pad, gets worked in small circles, and comes off with a damp cloth and then a dry one. No powders, no steel wool, no oven cleaner.
Glass and induction tops share the same glass-ceramic surface, so the method is the same. What we find on them differs. A radiant top gets hot enough to carbonize spills into hard black rings. Induction heats the pan, not the glass, so it collects pan-bottom rings and fine scuffs from cast iron instead.
What our crew does every time:
- Look for pitting before scraping. Jam, syrup and sweet sauces can pit the glass as they cool. If sugar has already etched the surface, we point it out before we start.
- Keep the blade new and nearly flat. A nicked blade or a steep angle is how scrapers scratch.
- Rinse the cream off completely. Leftover cleaner bakes into the same haze we were asked to remove.
If you spill something sugary yourself, that is the one mess to deal with while the surface is still warm, oven mitt on and scraper flat. Everything else can wait until the glass is cold.
The white rings confuse people. Metro Vancouver’s tap water is soft, so true limescale is less common here than homeowners assume. White marks are more often starchy pasta water that boiled over, metal marks from aluminum pans, or cleaner that was never rinsed. All three usually come off with the right cream.
Can baking soda or a scrub pad scratch a glass cooktop?
Baking soda on its own is softer than the glass, so it rarely scratches by itself. The scratches people blame on it usually come from what it was scrubbed with: a green scouring pad, a sponge holding grit, or salt and sand dragged across from a pot bottom. Green pads are the real culprit. Their abrasive is hard enough to cut glass-ceramic, and those scratches are permanent.
So “just use baking soda” is half right. Under a damp towel for half an hour, it softens burnt residue. Rubbed hard with the sponge by the sink, it turns into sandpaper.
Stainless is less forgiving. Brushed stainless has a grain, and even a mild paste rubbed in circles across it leaves a dull, swirled patch. Black stainless and fingerprint-resistant finishes are a coating over the steel. Abrasives wear through it to bright metal, and that cannot be polished back.
How do you get heat stains off a stainless steel cooktop?
Light straw and brown heat tint around gas burners usually comes off with an oxalic-acid cleanser worked along the grain, never across it, then rinsed well and finished with a thin stainless polish. Deep blue or purple tint from years of high flame has changed the surface of the steel itself. Polishing makes it lighter and more even, but it rarely disappears completely.
Before any product touches the tint, we degrease. Grease sits on top of the discolouration and keeps the cleanser from reaching it. On a gas range in a Burnaby condo near Metrotown, that pass is often half the job.
Two things we never use on stainless. Chlorine bleach, which can pit the steel. And steel wool, which leaves tiny fibres behind that rust into orange specks after the next wipe.
Cafés and restaurants see the same tint at a bigger scale, and our notes on commercial kitchen maintenance in BC cover stainless and tile in working kitchens.
Which cooktop marks can’t be cleaned off?
Scratches cut into glass-ceramic, pitting left by burnt sugar, chips along the edge and printed burner rings that have worn away are all permanent. Polishing can make light scuffs harder to see, but nothing restores glass that has lost material. A crack is a different matter. Stop using the cooktop, switch it off at the breaker, and have an appliance technician look at it before anyone cooks on it again.
A cracked or chipped top lets spills reach the elements and wiring underneath. Replacing the glass, an element, an igniter or a control board is appliance repair, and anything on the gas supply side belongs to a licensed gas fitter. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. We clean and polish. We do not repair appliances.
Grates, burner caps and knobs that have lost their finish are the easy part. They are ordered by model number and set in place.
When do landlords and home sellers usually book cooktop cleaning?
Mostly at turnover and before listing photos. Landlords book it between tenants, because a scorched glass top is one of the first things a new tenant photographs on move-in day. Sellers book it the week before the photographer comes, since stainless and black glass show every smear in listing shots. Owners tend to call before a holiday dinner, or after a spill they made worse trying to fix it.
In a rental, cooktop cleaning sits on the same list as wall patches, caulking and loose cabinet hardware. Our rental turnover repairs checklist covers the full move-out list for Metro Vancouver landlords.
Basement suites in Surrey and Coquitlam are a common case: an older smooth top, three tenants deep, that nobody has looked at closely in years. We clean it, say plainly if the glass is past saving, and work through the rest of the turnover list on the same trip. Our crew carries liability insurance, which most property managers ask about before anyone works in a tenanted unit.
What we look at on a cooktop estimate
A good photo answers most of it. When you send pictures through our booking page, we look at:
- The surface type. Glass-ceramic, induction, stainless, black stainless and porcelain enamel each get a different method.
- What the marks are. Burnt residue, film, metal marks, heat tint, or real damage.
- How long it has built up. One bad spill is quick. Three tenancies of baked-on grease is a longer job.
- Grates and burner parts. A six-burner gas range with cast iron grates takes more time than a four-zone glass top.
- What else is on the list. A cooktop booked together with tile, caulking or cabinet repairs makes better use of one visit.
Those are the things that affect the cost, and we quote after seeing them. Cooktop cleaning and polish is one part of our services for kitchens in houses, rentals and small businesses.

Frequently asked questions
Can you clean the grates and burner caps on a gas cooktop?
Yes. Grates and burner caps lift off, so we soak and scrub them away from the stove and clean the deck underneath while they are out. Enamel-coated grates get a non-scratch pad, never steel wool. We clean the visible burner parts only. If a burner lights unevenly, burns yellow or you smell gas, that is a job for a licensed gas fitter, and we tell you so.
Do you have to take the cooktop out of the counter to clean it?
No. We clean the cooktop in place, with the power off at the switch or breaker for electric and induction tops. The grease line where the cooktop rim meets the counter gets cleaned out with plastic tools so the counter edge does not chip. Lifting a drop-in cooktop means disconnecting it, and that belongs to an appliance technician or an electrician.
Do you clean cooktops in cafés and commercial kitchens?
Yes, for the surface work. Stainless ranges, prep counters and splashbacks in cafés and small restaurants get the same grain-aware cleaning and polish, usually booked before opening or after close. Exhaust hood and duct degreasing is a separate job for certified hood cleaning companies, and gas or electrical repairs on commercial equipment go to licensed trades.
How long does a cooktop cleaning visit usually take?
A glass top with light everyday marks is a short job and often gets added to other work on the same visit. A rental top with months of burnt-on sugar, or a six-burner gas range with heavy grates, takes longer because soaking and scraping cannot be rushed. A close-up photo of the cooktop lets us tell you roughly how long before we come out.
